Hey its Eric Powers!!! Happy New Year Lancers Fans!!! I hope you had a great Christmas and New Year, and that you are now recovered from the football championship game!!! I just wanted to let you know our next broadcast of the WAMV/Lancers Basketball Game of the Week is this Thursday, when the Lancers take on Staunton River! We hope to hit the airwaves around 7:20 with the pre-game coverage. However, the Lancers have a very tough match-up on the road Tuesday night against the Liberty Minutemen, who are among the teams who have a shot at the Seminole District title this year. Keep your fingers crossed for a Lancers victory, and we'll have a re-cap of the game Thursday night if you don't make the trip to Bedford!
Well, this is now one of the places where you can talk about Lancers' sports! Let's keep this blog busy with comments, and I'll talk to you soon!

Well, when your top scorer only nets you three points, you're going to have problems winning a basketball game. That's what happened to the Lancers Monday night as they fell to Liberty, 69-57, on the road; Jordan McCray scored only three points in the game, and, at one point, the Minutemen lead by as many as 20 points in the third quarter. High Points: Mario Vaughn shot five 3-pointers in the game, four of them coming in the first half as he finished with 16 points to lead Amherst in scoring, although no other Lancer scored in double figures. The loss ends the Lancers three-game winning streak, and drops the Lancers to 3-3 overall, 1-2 in league play.
Amherst will try to bounce back at home Thursday night against Staunton River in a district match-up. The Golden Eagles are 1-11 overall, 0-3 in the league after falling to Brookville by 30 points Monday night. You can hear all the action starting at approximately 7:20 with the Lancers Countdown To Tip-Off here on Lanceradio, 1420 AM, WAMV and wamvradio.com!

WOW! Two Seminole District games against two Division 4 teams -- and two BIG wins for the Amherst County Lancers basketball teams! First, the overwhelming victory over Staunton River last Thursday; and, last night, Amherst went across the river and beat Heritage, 65-56.
Three Lancers scored in double figures in the win, led by Jordan McCray's 23 points. It was a game where the Lancers needed McCray to step up, after the Lancers' leading scorer failed to get into double figures in two straight games. Mario Vaughn had another huge night beyond the arc -- four 3-pointers on the way to 15 points; Anthony Rose added 10.
Now Thursday night looms large, as Amherst plays host to the Brookville Bees, who fell in overtime to Altavista last night, 56-50. You can check out all the action with myself and Tom McBride beginning at approximately 7:20 with The Lancers Countdown To Tip-Off! Amherst is 5-3 overall, 3-2 in the Seminole District coming into the game with the Bees, who are 6-3 overall.

Some news from the world of Seminole District football: Heritage High School football coach Chris Jones has resigned from his position with the school. A news release said he wanted to "pursue other career opportunities". The school says they are beginning a search for his replacement immediately. The Pioneers finished 3-7 this past season, but had made the post-season multiple times under Jones.

Amherst rebounded nicely from the pounding it took at the hands of Brookville Thursday night (COLD SHOOTING ON A COLD NIGHT) to pick up a nice non-district win Saturday on the road. The Lancers beat Alleghany, 64-51, thanks to a fourth period where Amherst outscored the Mountaineers 22-11. For the second straight game, Tyler Brown led the Lancers in scoring with 18 points, including two 3-pointers. However, leading scorers Jordan McCray and Mario Vaughn scored only 7 points and 9 points respectively. Those two HAVE to be more consistent down the stretch for Amherst, as the Lancers begin the second half of the Seminole District season. In the meantime, Amherst and Alleghany will go to it again Tuesday night at Lancers Gym -- and that will be our next WAMV/Lancers Basketball Game of the Week broadcast. Join us, won't you, as we hope to hit the airways around 7:20 with The Lancers Countdown To Tip-Off!!!

hey when can they see the players from the bench are contributing more than the starters for . of course three points shots are nice but post play makes them available. lancers are small need to work on getting other team in foul trouble . coaching needs to start before the last 2 minutes of the game.

I don't disagree with the comments about how much the bench is contributing -- if there was a way, I think Tyler Brown should be in the starting lineup. The question is: How? The tallest player on the floor is 6-5, and the second tallest is about 6-2 -- they need to stay.. then, you have the two best offensive weapons (statistically) in McCray and Vaughn, and Sage Mays does the best job running the point. So where do you put Tyler Brown, other than just getting him into the lineup as quick as you possibly can? Its a tough question! As far as getting the other team in foul trouble, worry about the defense against the back door pass, then worry about getting the other team to try and force their offense!!
